Visit the Venice Art Biennale in Venice
The Venice Biennale has been running for over 120 years in the capital and takes place every two years; it first began in 1895 when the first international art exhibition was organized. The festival boasts crowds of over 500,000 each year to come and enjoy the showcase work ranging from Matisse, Dali and Kandinsky.
The 57th Biennale, titled ‘‘Viva Arte Viva’’ runs from May 13 to November 26 and is curated by Christine Macel. Various dance music, theatre and film festivals will also be held throughout the event.
La Tomatina in Buñol
The infamous event held in the Valencian town of Buñol is not for the faint of heart. Since 1945 the event has taken place on the last Wednesday of August and this year’s event is due to take place on August 30. This is a ticketed event for the purposes of crowd regulation, and participants can expect to prepare for exactly one hour of being part of the world’s largest food fight.
The event is such a great success that as well as being declared a Fiesta of International Tourist Event, over 120,000 pounds of tomatoes for the festival are provided by the Buñol City Council.
Event – Nuit Blanche in Paris
The night time festival takes place this year on October 7th and begins at 7:00PM through to 7:00AM. The decade long event is a free dusk ‘til dawn carnival of arts and culture inspired by St Petersburg’s ‘White Nights, where music and arts keep the population entertained throughout the night. For one night, tourists and native alike are free to roam the city and view the hundreds of art installations produced by a variety of the world’s finest art directors; it is a magnificent way to interact with the urban space through the unusually placed pieces which are built into many of the city’s landmarks.
Busó Festival in Mohács
The Busó Festival is the Festival of Spring which is celebrated each year where festival goers dress up as ‘Busó’ which is a frightening, devil-like creature set out to scare off the winter and welcome the spring. Inhabitants of Mohács arrive in rowboats on the Danube and take to the streets making noise with cowbells and wooden noisemakers, bidding farewell to winter.
The Busójárás was inscribed on the UNESCO’s ”List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity” in 2009 and is a festival of music, masquerading, dancing and parades.
