1.       What is interpreting?

Interpreting is the verbal translation between languages.  If you need someone to translate spoken proceedings between people who don’t all speak the same language, then you will need to consider booking an interpreter.

2.       What are the benefits of hiring an interpreter?

Having an interpreter improves the flow of communication and helps overcome language barriers. 3.       How to decide on the interpreting that you need?

The type of interpreting required is ascertained depending on various factors. For example, if you require interpreting for a conference then you will need consecutive or simultaneous interpreting; if you require an interpreter for an appointment, where one or more persons don't speak the same language (medical, legal, social service, etc.), you would need a bilateral/liaison interpreter; this type of interpreting is also commonly referred to as ‘community interpreting’. 4.       Interpreting for Health and Safety and other training purposes

5.       How many interpreters do I need?

For simultaneous interpreting there always needs to be two interpreters in a booth, with each interpreter taking turns every 30 minutes. Interpreting is exhausting work, so interpreters need frequent breaks. As a result, there is often a need to hire a pair of interpreters to cover for these periods and this is especially true for simultaneous or whispering interpreting which are often over long periods of time. 

In other types of interpreting, the amount of interpreters you need will depend on the nature of the assignment – factors such as how many languages there are, how many people require the services of an interpreter, and the timetable will influence this.

6.       When should you book interpreting services?

Interpreting Services for your meeting or event should be booked as far in advance as possible to ensure that the best and most suitably qualified interpreters are available. As soon as you know that you will need an interpreter you should go about making a booking or requesting a quote. While it is now a day to promote the preservation and celebration of world languages, the history of today’s date poignantly represents the day in 1952 when students demonstrating for recognition of their language Bangla as one of the two national languages of the then Pakistan, were shot and killed by police in Bangladesh.

As a language service provider, DCU Language Services of course supports all causes to keep languages and culture alive around the world, and we pride ourselves on being able to work with many linguists to offer translations and interpreting services into 70+ languages , including the lesser spoken languages. The rise of translations into Irish are a great example and we’re continuously receiving requests for translations into our national language.

In light of keeping languages alive, the School of Applied Languages in DCU is offering some evening courses on a pilot basis for the Spring semester. These classes are a great opportunity to brush up on foreign language skills or even to just to learn a new language/culture! While these short courses are primarily designed for DCU staff/students, with the aim of increasing multilingualism on campus and providing opportunities for cultural learning and intercultural exchange, they are also open to interested members of the public outside of DCU.

• M.A. in Intercultural Studies

Claire Bohan graduated with a BA in Arts (French/German) from NUI Maynooth in 1990 and went on to do a Masters and PhD at the University of Vienna, Austria. Returning to Ireland in 1998, she did the Masters in Intercultural Studies with SALIS in 2001 and moved from her post as a German lecturer in SALIS to develop the International Office in DCU. Claire took up the position of Director of Student Support & Development in DCU in 2006 and is still enjoying this role at the University.

Marielena Ivory is a 2005 graduate of Georgetown University's Walsh School of Foreign Service, where she majored in Culture and Politics. Following graduation she was selected to participate on the US Congress-Korean National Youth Assembly exchange program, before interning in the Policy and Research division of the US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants. She spent three years at the American Resort Development Association (ARDA), first as Meetings Coordinator and then as Meetings and Awards Manager. She moved to Meridian International Center where she worked in the Professional Exchanges Division. In 2009 she moved to Dublin and obtained her Masters in Intercultural Studies from Dublin City University in 2010. She most recently was at Google as a coordinator on the EMEA University Programs team, supporting university outreach across Europe.

Hazel Burlet (Rochford) (M.A. in Translation Studies, G/S 2005):

Having graduated from DCU in autumn 2005, Hazel went on to accept a six-month contract as a junior translator with the Language Services of a large multidisciplinary scientific research centre in Germany “Forschungszentrum Jülich”. In spring 2006, she was offered a permanent position as one of the two translators there. The team has since grown to include three translators whose services are available to the some 4,700 employees at Jülich. In addition to translating specialized scientific texts and popular scientific publications (predominantly German-English), Hazel also cross-checks her colleagues’ translations and revises publications written by the mainly German scientists in English.

She is also responsible for matters concerning translation software and other electronic aids. Her interests lie in the field of computer-aided translation, particularly in the convergence of TM and MT, and in the cultural aspects of translation.

Ciara Mc Nelis has a degree in Psychological Studies and Spanish from NUIG.

She graduated from the M.A. in Translation Studies in 2007. She worked as a Business Development Executive selling translation services for STAR Translation Ireland for almost three years. She then moved to IBM to work as an IT Services Sales Specialist for the U.K market.

Important Factors when Freelancing for a Company

1.       Qualifications:

We prefer to work with freelancers who have educational qualifications in their field, and preferably up to Masters Level. If you don’t have a qualification directly related to your field of work then it is advisable to at least obtain a language related qualification and/or relevant experience in the area. If you want to boost your profile and qualifications even further, there are many professional organisations which you can become a member of, an example being the Irish Translators and Interpreters Association (ITIA) and its equivalent in other countries; for Irish language translators, Foras na Gaeilge certification is very highly regarded and we certainly place an emphasis on using Irish language translators who hold this qualification.

2.       Experience:

In addition to education it is vital for us that our freelancers have prior working experience, and our ideal minimum is 3 years’ working experience. If you are just starting out as a translator or interpreter this is going to be harder to compete with so, when sending your CV to a company, make sure that you highlight any real working experience received through studies, internships, or even volunteer work. We are also always interested to know freelancer’s experience with software and IT related knowledge (translation technology tools, design packages, Microsoft office, etc.) and any areas of specialisation which may set you apart from others.

3.       Languages:

This always depends on customer demand but the languages that are usually constantly in demand are the main European languages (Irish, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Dutch); Scandinavian languages; Eastern European languages (Polish, Lithuanian, Latvian, Slovak, Czech, Romanian); Russian; Chinese; Japanese and Arabic. As much as possible, we endeavour to only allow freelancers to work into their native language.

It is imperative to highlight your language pairs to companies, and also to keep your language skills up to date. Be clear about your languages and the extent of your knowledge of them – there is no point in lying about your level of knowledge of any languages in order to get more work, or taking on a job in a language that you are not fully comfortable with as this will become apparent through the course of your work.

4.       Availability:

There is no point in contacting a translation company unless you are available to take on work. When you do contact a company you should outline the level of your availability (i.e. any days not available); also ensure that you let the company know of any holiday periods and how free you are to travel for assignments, which is especially relevant for interpreters.

It is also essential from our point of view that freelancers are contactable – this means regularly checking emails, answering your phone and replying to voicemails. Due to the nature of how freelancers work, we need to ensure that we can rely on contacting you – if we can’t contact you, we can’t assign work to you.

5.       Establishing a relationship with the Company:

Freelancers should look to translation companies as their employers, and this means you should be professional at all times: maintain high standards of quality, stick to deadlines, and maintain strict confidentiality with documentation and during interpreting assignments.

We want to work with people who are going to be personable, professional and flexible; and those who have good communication and customer service abilities.

We all know that English is currently the world’s most widely used lingua franca. But what effect does the dominance of English have on other languages? And how does translation from English affect other languages? And how would you go about investigating such questions in the first place? In this year’s Annual Translation Studies lecture, Prof. Juliane House will give us some answers to these important questions. Drawing on the work of the Covert Translation project, conducted at the German Science Foundation’s Research Center on Multilingualism, she shows how a multilingual diachronic corpus (an electronic collection of texts designed to show language change over time) can be used to investigate translation-related language variation and change.  She will discuss the background to the project, the corpus itself, and the analytical procedures (qualitative and quantitative, synchronic and diachronic) adopted in the research.

Juliane House is Professor Emerita of Applied Linguistics at Hamburg University and currently head of the Applied Linguistics programmes at the Hellenic American University in Athens, Greece. She is a senior member of the German Science Foundation’s Research Centre on Multilingualism at the University of Hamburg, where she has directed several projects on translation and interpreting. Her research interests include translation theory and practice, contrastive pragmatics, discourse analysis, politeness theory, English as a lingua franca, intercultural communication and global business communication. Her publications include A Model for Translation Quality Assessment, Translation Quality Assessment: A Model Revisited, Interlingual and Intercultural Communication, Cross-Cultural Pragmatics, Misunderstanding in Social Life, Multilingual Communication, Translational Action and Intercultural Communication and Translation.

Consideration needs to be placed on identifying the languages, the conference logistics, and effective communications with the interpreting service provider and interpreting team. The following is a brief guide of the different factors to be taken into consideration when organising interpreting services for your conference or meeting.

1. Conference Languages

​First and foremost, the main language or languages for your conference need to be identified.

Floor language: This is the term used to refer to the language being used by the conference speakers and chairperson. In multi-lingual conferences there can be a number of speakers of varying languages, and in these cases there will be a number of floor languages.

Active language: This is another term to describe the floor language/s used by the conference speakers. All other languages, such as those of audience members are then referred to as the passive languages.

Interpreters are multi-lingual, and their active languages are classified as:

• A language: interpreter’s native language.
• B language: the other language/s of which the interpreter has full command and works into or from.
• Some interpreters will have a C language, which is a language that they understand fully but don’t have a full enough command of to interpret into.

If there are interpreters who do not have one of the floor languages as one of their active languages, then relay interpreting will be used. This is the process whereby one active language is interpreted into another language and the other interpreters will then work from this interpretation (e.g. for Arabic to Spanish: Arabic speaker → interpretation into English → interpretation into Spanish). Mostly, this method is only necessary for lesser-spoken languages when there aren’t as many qualified interpreters available, but it is a point that should also be considered when inviting speakers to your conference versus the language of the delegates. 

There are always 2 interpreters required per language, so it's important to identify the active languages of the conference to identify how many interpreters are required. Once the language requirements are identified, your interpreting service provider can help assign and quote for qualified and experienced interpreters for each language pair.

2. Conference Logistics

After identifying the conference languages and amount of interpreters needed, it is important to consider the logistics of the conference:

• Location: This should be an easily accessible location, for the participants and interpreters alike as many will be travelling from abroad. If interpreters need to travel to get to the conference location, these travel charges should be factored into your conference budget.
• Agenda: this will affect the logistics of the conference and the number of interpreters required. For example various plenary sessions/workshops/breakout meetings running in parallel will require a larger team of interpreters to ensure that each session is served by interpreters.
• Venue: the venue chosen should have good acoustics and little background noise and be suitable for the placement of the interpretation booths and technician's desk (standard booths for two interpreters are usually 1.8 metres x 1.8 metres x 2 metres high)

These are all factors which would be overlooked, but can have a huge impact on the quality of interpretation.

3. Room Layout

When organising interpreting for your conference, there needs to be enough space for attendees, interpreters, interpreting equipment and equipment technicians.

There are three usual standard room layouts for conferences:

1. Theatre layout: delegates sit in rows of chairs opposite a speaker’s    podium/stage.
2. Boardroom: all delegates seated around a table.
3. Classroom: delegates sit in rows of chairs with tables opposite a front table.

The format of your conference (i.e. how interactive it will be, breakout sessions, etc.), the amount of attendees and the location will help with the room layout decision.

Interpretation equipment can be supplied to suit each layout, but this should be decided as early as possible in the conference planning stage so that it can be decided where booths, tables microphones and other equipment should be placed and also for budgeting purposes as these can all effect the price. The more information on the room layout provided, the better, as we will then be able to tailor our quotations specifically for your requirements.

4. Interpreting booths

It is important that the interpreting booths are positioned correctly to ensure that your conference runs smoothly:

• Interpreting booths should be positioned so that interpreters have a clear view of both the speakers and any screens.
• There should be enough space to allow interpreters to easily and discretely leave the booths and the venue.
• All interpreting booths should be positioned together in a group.
• There should be adequate space provided for the technician next to the booths.

​5. Communications

In order to avoid any mishaps on the day and that all areas are covered for the conference, it’s essential to have effective and smooth communication between the client and the interpreting provider. At DCU Language Services, we try to keep a consistent communication flow through regular correspondence and meetings with the customer.

The conference organiser must provide as much information and conference materials as possible ahead of the conference for the interpreters to prepare. While interpreters are fully experienced and qualified in their field, there is always some degree of preparation needed for each conference in order to guarantee the best quality of interpreting. and every event differs in terms of items discussed, presentations and terminology used.

Essential information includes the agenda, speaker’s notes and presentations, background and reference materials, conference handouts, previous meeting/conference minutes or notes, and information on any specific terminology.

Just like a speaker at a conference would not go unprepared and without looking over their speech, notes and presentations in advance, interpreters need to be equally as prepared. 

6. At the Conference

Your interpreting services provider should appoint one point of contact for the interpreting team on the day/s of the conference to ensure everything runs smoothly, in addition to the interpreting services coordinator if he/she will not be present at the conference.

It is often thought that anyone who speaks a language fluently will be naturally able to translate into that language. This is not true… Translation is a profession and there are required skills to the job just like any other!
